Fingers are one of the three main mechanics of drumming. It's important to do exercises that isolate the fingers to develop better control and awareness of movement. Application is often the most difficult part of this technique. This video demonstrates isolation and dexterity building exercises along with useful ways to apply the technique. 0:00 Introduction 2:41 Exercise 1: Shifting Fingers 4...

I think that wrist snap was the piece of info Ive been looking for. Thank you 🤗
Will you be with Metronome or not, please
Thanks for all your videos, they are extremely useful, short and to the point! Invaluable for someone starting out :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Thank you so much! I appreciate you! I'm going to go buy drumsticks tomorrow!
Great explanation. I was challenging to how I can relax my muscles and play faster. I was using too much list and it was limited. Thank you for making the video. It helped me a lot and will start the practice today 🙏
Very clear demonstration! Thanks a lot!
Excelente ...
Thank you SO much! This was eye-opening for me, and really helpful. Just started learning to play drums at age 56, gah, appreciate your taking the time to go through all the techniques.
Ok, well for a bit ins-pir-a-ti-on, how about Led Zeppelin's 'Fool In The Rain' ftom their penultimate (last but one) album 'In Through The Out Door' - feat the marvellous John Bonham? Rather than viewing on UA-cam, instead stream on, say, Amazon Music in Ultra HD Atmos sound. Pure and unadulterated, drumming joy.
thank you ! so hard to find such practical, useful instructions!
Simple, clear back-to-basics approach re stick control starting with the fingers - one digit at a time. Glad to have chanced upon this drum tutor's videos and have subscribed. Question: Are there any exercises recommended in order to strengthen your thumb & finger grip? Reason I ask is, the sticks keep slipping until there's no stick left and it falls on the floor/practise pad!
Hello, I'm glad you're getting something out of my videos. This is a common issue and unfortunately I really don't have an answer for that. My first response when people are experiencing issues is to take a step backwards and go slower and very deliberate. Watch how you're moving and see if anything is changing when the stick starts slipping.
I am struggling with finger dexterity and control, much to learn and practice. Thanks for the lesson, it's brilliant.
Hi, thanks so much for the video but I just have so much trouble bouncing the stick with my pointer and middle fingers, the only way I am able to do it is when I hold the stick at a weird angle and it feels very uncomfortable and barely bounces back up. Any tips?
Hello, it's hard to say without seeing what's happening when you're playing. I would suggest scanning through this video in case any of these tips help. ua-cam.com/video/pupvjo-Qycs/v-deo.html
Nice job! Is there anything better than a nice aged K ride?
When you know, you know.
Hi Maria, very cool, I'm almost there :) How do you play the right foot at that speed? Heel up or down?
Hi, for me the volume determines my foot position more than speed. For something like this I do a kind of in-between. I only keep my heel all the way down when I need to play really quiet or am on my jazz kit where the bass drum is wide open and very sensitive. There's a lot of nuance that's difficult to explain. I have it on my list to do a bass drum technique video demonstrating all this. Thanks for watching :-)
Thank you for this!!! Really!!!! Helps me a LOT!!!! 🙏🙏
Amazing
Interesting, some good tips. Are you familiar with Steve Smith's "Pathways of Motion"? I definitely recommend you check it out!
Hi, yes, I'm very familiar with Steve's lessons. He teaches the same curriculum we went through at North Texas. He has the best hands in the business.
@@MariaWulfMusic I definitely can't argue with that!
I’m speechless, that’s an excellent lesson!
Thank you.
Did i miss the notation for the bass part. Is it 3/4 time? bass hat bass, 123? or is there triplet rest?
Hello. The pattern is in 4/4 time. The HH is on 2 & 4. The bass drum is on beats 1 (x) & 3 (x) & 1, etc. When you add the hands it can sound very syncopated at times.
@@MariaWulfMusic Thanks for your answer really appreciate that. So the feel of the triplet on bass is just due to the fast tempo yeah? I subscribed.
You are a great drummer and teacher. I bet you can play 64th note triplets no problem. This video brings me to one question though. How is your metronome so loud?
Hello, I was using a Yamaha Clickstation and it has a fairly loud click at the highest volume. I'm not sure if they're even available anymore.
Her finger control is amazing. Her clitoris does not stand a chance
My left is my non-dominant hand. Why does my stick want to drift and not stay at the same angle when I go to spring it back into place? @3:21 you say it may be flopping all around and that is ok. But it is not ok. Going slow is your suggestion, but even going slow the bounce to spring back is still flopping around, there must be something I don't understand here. My right hand is fine. I need help so I can get good again.
It's hard to say without watching what you are doing. I can only recommend to experiment with where on the fingers you're holding the stick and how they are moving. Even thought I'm demonstrating doing these exercises with them closer to the ends of your fingers, it might work better to hold them closer to your palm. Also, watch exactly how your dominant hand is doing it then compare it to your weaker one. You might find where things are going wrong.
@@MariaWulfMusic Love this reply and thank you with all my heart for your time.
I have had lessons from a city orchestra percussion leader, another guy that only put me on stick control on snare, only. I lost interest in him, I was 11. Lessons from a decent teacher from a music store, and also from a multiplatinum celebrity drummer, and maybe someone I am spacing out, then I worked in a music store with a daily visit from various pro's that would hang out, do clinics, and many drummers on a daily basis, still it was this video that finally showed and explained this technique and how to practice it. Great lesson, thank you.
I don't have any musical instrument practice except acoustic guitar for 6 months and i always find myself watching a ton of drum videos. It looks so fun and honestly i think i really want to try. Thank you for this video because it will be awesome to practice this when i get some stix on my hands.
This is very close to how my drum teacher taught me!
Thank you !
Great videos! Thanks @maria. Simple but so effective. Learning so much 👍 you earned a subscriber.
Thx for the lesson, teacher
I recently watched a instructional video if the great Tony Williams and he said he held the sticks with his 4th and 5th fingers (at the back of the hand) rather than thumb and index. I tried but it felt awkward and very difficult to control the stick. I'm never going to be Tony Williams I'll stick with this way. Nice instruction though
Great info. Thanks.
very smart & aware teacher. Thanks
This would be better, if the sound synced with the video
Yeah, I agree. That was an error on my part. The recording speed and playback speeds were set on different fps. Syncing the audio isn't possible because of the speed variation so I had to go with a happy medium.
I’ve been drumming for about 6 years and I’ve played matched grip the whole time. I’ve decided that I want to try traditional and maybe even switch over because I’m mostly playing jazz these days. I think I have my fingers in the right place but I’m having trouble getting any rebound, and I can’t play double strokes easily or fluidly. Is this down to just practising more? Or is there maybe something wrong with my actual grip?
I have the same problem and can’t figure it out
Hello. First of all, traditional grip can be really tricky and I don't push it on my students unless they really want to learn it. If you haven't checked them out already, I have a video on traditional grip exercises that hopefully can help. I also have another video on troubleshooting technique that can be preventing freedom of stick bounce and movement. ua-cam.com/video/Z9g7nv3PCrg/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/pupvjo-Qycs/v-deo.htmlsi=Oco9-7348TLJICFi
Superb lesson.
This is incredibly hard. Most drummers don’t realize how hard this is.
is it right that it's like a nerve action? Different to wristing, I can get the nerve action going in my fingers like what you are doing but varying the tempo is difficult if not impossible, I seem to have one set "nerve" speed... I realize time spent will be defining, will I eventually be able to play in time is my truer question, as the nerve speed, I can turn it on, but timing it... if the timing of the song suits my nerve speed fine, I just can't vary it yet. How long might I reasonably expect it to take spending say 10 minutes a day focusing on finger playing... I can't manage more, arthritis at 60... would it take about a year of daily practice do you think... or more? I want to be able to use finger technique in my general "flow"... I just find it something like a switch at the moment, and in that switching I can come a cropper... and do, thankfully in my studio alone...
And then with the paradiddles
This is brilliant! Thank you for making this video.
hey Maria: Do you have any sheet music that shows when the accents occur? Tom Gracen
Thanks! That was pretty awesome. Yep I've got to work on my finger control cuz I have none.
Fabulous
Thank you :-)
Extremely interesting video, and I'm not even a drummer!
Glad you liked it.
Great correction...I so grateful for your instruction! Thanks so much 🎉
This video is just great! Thanks so much.
Technically astute, wow
WOW! I really appreciate your class, because with a few minutes for a few days I have considerably improved my way of playing, because I see that it is not the use of the arm/wrist but the fingers. Your class is a treasure for us beginners! And I am already one more subscriber to your channel. Until the next class. Thank you very much.
You are one awesome drummer!!
Thanks so much. Lot's of practice...
Is it ok to have your weak hand grip be SLIGHTLY differently angled than your strong hand? I feel that when i use my fingers on my weak hand, the fingers bounce the stick around UNLESS turn my wrist by a few degrees.
Hello, and great question. My thoughts are that if it won't lead to injury and if you can get the same speed and response as your strong hand then it's ok. Everybody's build is unique and we sometimes need to adapt in ways others don't.
